Disability Awareness Breaking Barriers: Disability Awareness in Rural Rwanda

Changing attitudes toward disability in communities where cultural stigma still persists.

Back to Blog

In many rural communities in Rwanda, cultural stigma around disability still persists. Mothers are often blamed when a child is born with a disability, and families face social isolation.

Our awareness campaigns in Bweramana Sector are working to change these attitudes. Through community meetings, home visits, and collaboration with local leaders, we are promoting understanding and acceptance.

We train parents on their rights and the rights of their children, helping them access services and support networks. Our Community-Based Rehabilitation approach ensures that persons with disabilities receive the care they need within their own communities.

The results have been encouraging — we see more families willing to seek medical care and more community members offering support to affected families.
